Hi! Welcome to my DonorsChoose.org page! I am thrilled you are interested in learning about my class of vibrant and fun spirited students! I teach a class of buzzing bees at a Title I elementary school located in our nation's capitol. My classroom is a pre-k special education classroom specifically for students with Autism Spectrum disorder and developmental delays. My students are adventurous, curious, loving and always on the move! Your contribution will help to address their academic, communication and/or sensory needs!
My students communicate in diverse ways!
Some students use verbal speech, while other uses speech generating devices, sign language approximations or PECS. PECS stands for Picture Exchange Communication. It allows those without verbal speech to communicate with a communication partner by exchanging picture icons of the desired item. PECS is often used as the first mode of communication for early learners with communication deficits. Students in my classroom also have a variety of sensory needs. They love to explore their environments and seek rich sensory experiences through taste, smell, touch and sight. Communication opportunities and sensory activities are embedded throughout the day alongside age appropriate early academic activities to teach colors, numbers, letters, matching and sorting.
Sensory integration is a huge part of life within my classroom. The inability to receive, respond to and organize information through your senses (sensory processing disorder) has the potential to negatively impact your ability to communicate and manage your behavior. While sensory processing is a tremendous hurdle for my students, they are given multiple opportunities throughout every day to engage in sensory play.
Materials such as water beads and therapeutic sand allow students to interact with various textures they may not regularly come into contact with (rough, smooth, wet, squishy) and allow them to process these sensations in a low-stress, environment.
The "BeanBob" chairs give students a break from traditional seating. Bean bag chairs allow for wiggly bodies to sit more comfortably, give proprioceptive sensory input, and promote body awareness. The Pop Toob and Dot Markers set builds bilateral coordination, fine motor skills, with the former also giving auditory stimulation. The Liquid Motion Bubbler is a calming tool, to relieve stress and anxiety, very common in students with Autism. All of these sensory materials should be staples within every classroom serving students on the Autism Spectrum, and will have far reaching benefits for my students.
