My students need a greater comfort level in my classroom by eliminating some noise, dirt and germs with cleaning bottles and chair socks, as well as 25 subscriptions to Scholastic News and a Fairy Tale Proofreading kit to make learning more fun.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever wiped down a student's desk and seen the filthy grime that comes off? Have you ever heard a noise so awful that it makes your hair stand up on end? With your help these are some of the areas I want to focus on improving in my classroom.
My Sensational Second Grade students are predominantly from inner city Los Angeles, low income and limited English speaking homes.
Illness and lack of ability to focus are common in classes with younger students and I would like to improve both in my class by adjusting the health and noise levels in my classroom. I believe these improvements will assist with the comfort and learning levels in my classroom.
My Project
Have you ever wiped down a student's desk or table and seen the dirt and grime that comes off? Much of that is laden with germs which affect student's health and therefore learning. I visited a classroom where students used spray bottles to wash their desks and was told that the illness rate had dropped significantly since this had become a regular routine. I plan to have students use the spray bottles to be able to wash thier own desks on a regular basis. In addition, I have visited quite a few classrooms which have tennis balls on the bottom of the chairs and the reduction in noise was immediately apparent. I am hoping putting tennis balls on my own chairs will eliminate unncessary noise and keep the floors from becoming so scratched. Lastly, the Scholastic News subscription will assist me in teaching current events in science and social studies which our adopted programs do not do. The Fairy Tales editing book will hopefully make the process of learning to edit more enjoyable.
Reducing noise and germs are two areas which I would really like to improve my classroom.
Additionally, I am always looking for ideas and materials to make learning more interesting for my students.
