My Students
Have you ever wanted to inspire your students to dream big? Have you ever wanted to teach your students to cease the day and never give up on your dreams? Well, this is the ticket for my seniors.
My students live in a suburb in Pennsylvania.
We are a small school with 800 students total, K-12. We are unique in the respect that we house kindergarten through twelfth grade in one building.
Many of my seniors are living in homes with one or even two parents who are unemployed, and they are finding themselves as the primary provider in the family. My students want to go to college, but they may not be able to do so because of family obligations.
My Project
I am requesting copies of the book, The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch. I want every senior to read this book before they graduate high school. My hope is to inspire my students to not give up on themselves. I want them to read this novel, so that they can learn that even in the grimmest of situations, you have to find a way to overcome the worst. While reading I want my students to draw personal connections between the author and their own lives. Some of the questions I want them to ask themselves include: Why has this lecture/book struck a chord with so many people?, Where is the speaker/author coming from?, What are my childhood dreams?, How might I achieve them?, What were the dreams my parents had and how did they fulfill them?, Who are mentors that I can turn to?, What lessons have they taught me?, What wisdom would I choose to impart to the world if it was my last chance?, and What are the lessons of my own life?
Funding this project will hope to inspire my students to achieve their dreams even when they think all hope is lost.
My students this year and years to come will be able to experience this great phenomena. They too will be able to be reminded of not giving up on themselves.
