Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an all special education high school that serves students in Chicago. Many of the students live in high poverty and high crime areas. Students at my school have a wide range of disabilities, such as mild to moderate intellectual disabilities, autism, emotional disabilities, physical disabilities, and more.
Students at my school get to experience high school in a smaller, safer, and more individualized setting than at their neighborhood schools.
Just like at their neighborhood schools, students rotate classes, participate in sports, and attend dances. My school teaches academics through the lens of independent functioning and vocational skills, helping students become independent and productive members of their community after graduation.
My Project
My students are high-poverty special education students. Many of them will never have another opportunity to travel to our nation's capital. Additionally, this is a great opportunity for my students to practice their independent living skills and interact with their non-disabled peers.
Students will learn about social justice issues, tour important locations in and around Washington DC, and make friends with other students from all over the United States and its territories.
Without your help and support, my students would not be able to afford the full cost of the trip, and would therefore be denied this amazing experience. I've seen the amazing social/emotional and academic benefits of this trip firsthand. Students return more confident in their own skills and knowledge and with a greater sense of civic pride.
