Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students represent any average public school class, including about 40% from low income families. They are inquisitive but are un-decisive about their future career life. About 20% show interest in science as a career direction, and less than 50% will eventually attend college to completion.

As a 13 year biology teacher, a leader in curriculum development in my school and outside my school, and a National Board Certified teacher I expect this conference will enable me to keep myself and my colleagues up to date with NGSS implementation and get involved in District curricular decisions.

My Project

In this Professional Development participants will get practice in developing and evaluating lessons according to NGSS criteria. Special emphasis will be given to common core and literacy in the NGSS implementation. We will take part in discussions about State- and District-specific decisions about middle grade curriculum, and develop assessments that will be used at these levels as well. As a result, students in my school will receive the quality science instruction that they deserve in order to be prepared for career challenges and logical decision making in the 21st century. The conference I request here is only a first phase out of three phases of roll-out. I anticipate attending the two follow up sessions while I implement the concepts and assessment that I will learn in the first phase.

I expect my students, as well as students of my colleagues, to receive a higher quality science instruction, which is more student-centered, inquiry-based, and where they develop more and more skills of expressing their ideas in a language-rich, logical and evidence-based manner.

All of the skills that our students will develop under NGSS will help them improve the way they adjust to their living conditions and how they work to improve these conditions at the personal and community levels.
