This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Some of my students face challenges outside of school and school is something for them to look forward to. They usually stop me in the hall and ask what we are learning that day before I even get a chance to walk in the door! My students are taught every day, not just through lessons, but through learning opportunities. They love hands-on learning, where they get to explore and solve through the use of manipulatives and materials.
My students are extraordinary, and so should be their learning experiences.
We learn through small groups and students get a choice on the activities they do. Alfred Mercier once said, “What we learn with pleasure, we never forget.” I hope my students always remember our class!
My Project
One of my previously funded projects included purchasing a TPT gift card to buy a resource for Send Home Science Kits and materials to make them. As I was assembling them, I was questioning if most parents would even want to do them, or see them as a hassle. I assembled all 40 of them anyway because I knew at least some would like them. I explained them to kids and sent them home. The next day I curiously asked if anyone had looked at them yet or tried one. The response was amazing! More than half the students had tried at least one of the activities just on the first night. By the following Monday, almost all students had tried one and lots had done multiple. Hearing them talk about, and share how, their experiment went, and discussing how not all of us had the same results or some of our experiments went wrong was a true Science lesson.
The best part was that parents had a chance to be involved in fun learning and not just the same old homework routine.
Given their popularity, I would love to do another holiday themed set to send home over the winter break and a Valentine's Day one to send home in February. I will need all of the items, such as jingle bells, magnets, batteries, craft objects, electrical tape, etc. to assemble the kits, as well as some other items I intend to purchase on my own.
