Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students from El Paso, TX are special in every single way. They are thirteen students with different special needs that vary from down syndrome to autism and intellectual disabilities. I teach Practical Academic Skills to help them become independent adults in a near future.
My students are always excited about coming to school.
They are eager to learn new things and amazed by the small things they accomplish or you do for them. They also volunteer in local companies to acquire job skills as part of their academic program and they never complain about it, they are happy to attend those activities and love to do it. I couldn't be prouder of their little or great accomplishments. I love what I do and thankful for everything I learn from my students as well.
My Project
This project is based on student needs. Our students are facing something that I have not ever faced in my life, nor have most adults in my students' lives. This leads to anxiety, frustration, and a hard time processing what is happening. When the adults around them feel this way, it can be hard to be focused on being a student.
We know that students cannot learn when they are experiencing trauma or adverse experiences.
This year has created trauma like no other in current history. In our city, we are going through a surge in COVID cases and that has caused anxiety and difficulty regulating what my SPED students already experience. This project is designed to create a safe learning environment and focus on their social-emotional learning. The stress balls will help to calm their body and mind. The surge protectors help them not worry about their devices running out of charge and focus on learning. The cardstock paper is to print out visuals that they can handle without the fear of it tearing which often causes them anxiety. The storage crates and plastic shoeboxes are for them to keep their areas organized and reduce clutter which also stresses them out. The composition notebooks are for them to write about their emotions and help them develop their social-emotional skills. All of these items will be set up to be a calming space to bring stress, anxiety, and frustration back down when students are back in school in person.
