This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year the students that learn in our resource room are 6th, 7th and 8th grade Math Resource Learners. Because we share a small room, and although it's not all at the same time, the room has to remain quite sterile. Students don't feel quite comfortable, like it's "their" room. Starting a new year, and for most, in a new physical space since last year was virtual, they have been asking if we can decorate. But due to Covid we have to keep the room as minimal and sanitized as possible at at all times. So to personalize the space, we would like to take snapshots of our students' learning and display them on our outdated chalkboards that can't other wise be used.
Our school is an inner city public school on Chicago's northwest side-with a population of 550 students-grades six through eight.
Approximately 95 percent of our students receive free or reduced lunch. 16 percent of our students have special needs. These are the students who we want to make feel especially comfortable in their shared classroom.
My Project
Our Resource students have diverse learning abilities that prevent them from learning in a general education classroom. The Resource Room is very sterile and utilized by 3 grade levels and at least 6 classrooms. Students want to decorate and feel happy learning but due to Covid, as well as the number of students who share this space, the room must maintain a sterile, uniform layout.
Turning an old outdated chalkboard that can't be used, into a photo wall with lights and students photos will provide them with the sense of belonging they have been asking for.
