My students are fascinated by the Civil Rights Era, yet have so little knowledge of what really happened during that incredible time in history. As a teacher, I know this needs to change immediately.
My students are a fantastically spirited group of Title 1 students.
They are hard working students who come from over 40 different countries around the world and speak over 34 different languages. With the diversity in the school, it's important that these students can see positive role models in the world around them, both from the past and the present. We work hard at school to be positive role models for our students but many of the students try very hard to be streetwise instead of appreciating the community. My students don't feel like they have a voice as an individual, but in reality they need to understand the struggles the people from our past have gone through to create a more positive future for people of today.
My Project
It is my hope that this movie will spark a desire for social change at our school, our neighborhood, and in our world. I want students to be inspired to make a change for the positive in their lives and be able to open up a strong discussion about the realities of life in the past and the ability that even one person has to change the future for the better. In the darkness of the theater as all of my students sit together, the experience they will share will be one that impacts them in a positive way for many years to come. I hope this experience encourages students in many ways: to make a difference in their lives - setting themselves on the path of success instead of expected failure; to make a positive change or impact in the lives of others; work hard toward your dreams and goals no matter what the setback, because in life there will be many, but anything worth having is worth working hard for.
This opportunity will spark the desire for positive, peaceful change in my students and give a voice to the voiceless students who have passion and leadership abilities to change the world for the better, who are no longer willing to sit in the shadows.
This experience will change my students and help them find the courage and passion to want to change the world. Thank you for your support for this project and showing my students what it means to make a difference in the lives of others.
