My Students

Learning doesn't simply happen because there are desks in a room. Instead, real learning happens when students feel safe, feel heard, and feel confident to take risks and even fail. So more than teaching students to find correct answers, a teacher's job is to build a community of learners.

Ionia High School is situated in a small, close-knit, farming community.

Teachers work closely with students and their parents to build relationships. Building these connections to our learning community helps students stay in school, as can be seen by the school's rising graduation rate. And not only are students connected locally but digitally as well. More and more, students are learning to leverage their virtual connections to support what they are learning in the classroom. Whether it is to share their writing with an authentic audience or using an online platform to collaborate with students half-way across the country on a joint project, IHS students are seeking connections to their learning, to bring what they are learning about in class into their daily lives. And this is crucial for helping students improve their competencies in critical reading and writing skills. Students want and need to see how what we do in the classroom impacts their lives outside of the classroom.

My Project

My students need an instant print camera and enough film to personalize not only our classroom space, but spaces in our schools. Students study a variety of texts in our 10th grade "Voices in America" literature-based English class, but literature comes alive when students can make connections to their lives, their voices. In addition to studying the voices of other writers, I want my students to gain confidence in their own writing voice. We'll start on day one by creating a #MyVoice photo wall inside our classroom. I will ask students to carefully consider how they would describe their writing voice, and using a speech-bubble photo prop, ask students to write that description out and have their picture taken with it. We'll not only decorate a wall in our classroom with our #MyVoice selfies, but use Twitter to both share out and begin a conversation about voice in writing. Throughout the semester, we'll be using the instant camera to create displays not just in our classroom but throughout the school in order to share our learning and build connections to our community. We'll put a face to our learning.

Students need to see themselves reflected in their classroom spaces as well as in the curriculum.

If we want our students to emerge from our classrooms as confident readers and writers, they need to see themselves as just that. Students shouldn't simply analyze the voice of other writers. Instead, they need to understand the impact of their own voices. This project will not only help students "see" the members of our learning community but also gain confidence and build connections.
