Students often struggle with a love of reading books and our students are no different. One of my focuses this year as a teacher is going to be on fostering a love for reading, both in the classroom and at home.
Our school is a low-income school, with over 65% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch.
Students often cannot afford to find books of their own that they enjoy and public transportation to a library can be an issue. Providing an up-to-date library is the first step in growing their love of books.
I have empty shelves that I would like to fill up with high-interest titles that my students will love. I believe that if I provide them with new options, they might be able to find something they love!
My Project
Providing a larger variety of contemporary books for SSR will ensure that all my students can find books that will inspire them and appeal to their interests and values. Giving them some freedom to pursue their interests through books will increase engagement and heighten their incentive to attempt challenging material. This will help them improve their reading ability and increase their vocabulary through an activity that is guaranteed to be simple, enjoyable and personalized to the preferences and abilities of every student.
Being able to offer a variety of books to my students will empower them to begin taking responsibility for their education and enrichment.
SSR helps students begin seeing reading as something they do for themselves, and not only for a teacher or a class. This project will help motivate and inspire my students by showing them that the skills they build in my classroom will empower them to continue pursuing their interests in their adult lives.
