Our students come from a working-class, urban area with a high poverty rate. They are bright and ambitious about their futures. Many work long hours after school to help their families. Some will be the first in their household to attend college. Others have never traveled outside their current city. Few have luxuries such as summer travel and cultural experiences that peers in wealthier communities take for granted. Some even lack access to reliable transportation.
Our students need online Latin novels as graded readers for self-selected reading time.
Our students deserve choices to match their needs and interests. Due to Covid 19, they need online materials to reach their full potential since we will work from home for at least the first term.
Studies show that reading is one of the most effective ways of improving vocabulary in any language. Latin is no different. Our students need a wide range of interesting online materials written in Latin to improve their cultural background knowledge and develop their Latin vocabularies.
This grant will provide students a wide range of Latin novellas to select and read at home while distance-learning and at school when we return.
Some are about the signs of the Zodiac, others are mystery-adventures, and others are about mythology. For example, "Ego Polyphemus," is a Latin novel told from an infamous one-eyed monster's point of view. This grant will provide a one-year license for up to 180 students in an engaging platform.
