My Students

My students come from a low income/high poverty district and are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom and often don't have self-regulation skills they need to be ready to learn.

Our students seek out support staff as a safe place to calm their bodies and minds in order to get back to learning.

Our school uses social-emotional curricula to teach our students how to self-regulate their behaviors and emotions. Sometimes my students need individual support to process their thoughts, feelings, and emotions.

My Project

These tools and resources will allow our students the opportunity to build and practice crucial self-regulation skills in the educational environment. Our students come from low income backgrounds and a high percentage of them have also experienced trauma in their lives. They often lack the skills needed to self regulate, and benefit from a place to practice and develop these skills so they can be successful in school and life.

When students are struggling in class, they may take a break to use these tools to calm down.

These tools will not only be used for students school wide, but they will be available for staff members to use as well. We will use the social stories to teach and reinforce necessary social emotional skills. These books will be read to whole groups as well as individual students. There are also resources included for staff to develop skills to work with students. Snacks and water often quickly reset dysregulated bodies by addressing physiological needs. The nightlight projectors will be housed with both the psychologist and school social worker to create a calm environment for students who need a place to refocus and self-regulate their behavior and emotions. The bean bag chair will be a place where they can take a few moments to reset. Sensory toys, such as the kinetic sand, help calm the nervous system.
