My students are in a Title I school. Over 70% of my students are economically disadvantaged, qualifying for free and reduced lunch. The Covid-19 Pandemic has added additional stressors to the family systems. Parents are often overwhelmed with working multiple jobs and providing for their families, resulting in students not always getting their basic needs met. The students are dealing with many emotions and outside stressors, and often need additional support and motivation to stay engaged.
As a school social worker, I find myself helping students with their emotional health, through teaching social skills, coping skills and supporting a safe and healthy school environment.
My Project
As a school social worker I meet with students across our school. Since the Covid Pandemic, students are experiencing more challenging emotions with fewer skills to self regulate. They often come to school carrying stressors from their family, causing distraction and lack of motivation for academics.
Emotion based games and sensory activities can help students feel more at ease when talking to someone about difficult topics.
Helping students stay motivated and engaged contributes to a safe and healthy school. A big part of my job is to help students stay focused and learning in the classroom. I wouldn't be able to do this without motivational items.
