This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My second grade scholars are creative, thoughtful, and full of energy! They always come to school with a positive attitude and are ready to fully engage in their learning. My energetic learners greatly benefit from hands-on learning that allow them to release their energy and perform best when they are able to MOVE! I want to meet their needs and provide them with comfortable learning spaces that allow them to meet their full potential. My scholars come to school each day ready to try new things and take brave chances in order to grow both personally and academically. Truly, they are my inspiration!
My Project
Flexible seating in our classroom promotes student choice, improved brain health, comfort, and an increased sense of community! While teachers are expected to differentiate instruction and assignments to meet individual student needs, it is equally important to differentiate the seating options in the classroom.
Students learn best when they have a chance to work together.
Traditional desks in rows isolate students from each other. Flexible seating allows students to easily pair up, work in small groups, and discuss as a whole class. These flexible seating options will also meet students' needs for sense of touch.
After implementing a few flexible seating choices such as floor rugs and lap desks and seeing the powerful impact on my students desire to choose optional seating. I know I need to expand these options to all of my students to allow them to learn in an environment that meets their needs. I desire to provide our scholars with floor tables, wobble cushions, wobble stools, and balance balls to give them opportunities to get out their wiggles, have the power of choice, and be comfortable while learning!
