Self-Regulation Kits to Support Active Bodies and Minds
My students need stability ball chairs, wiggle seats, chair bands, and standing desks to calm active bodies, soothing sound machines to refocus energy, quiet canopied areas, and other tools to get ready to learn.
Our school is a low-income, high-poverty elementary school of over 800 students. My students are faced with a wide range of challenges from fluctuating caretakers, to homelessness, to learning and developmental disabilities, to not having adequate food or clothing. With these adversities come along behaviors and needs that interfere with learning. Students as young as 4 walk into our building every day carrying enormous weight on their shoulders that many of us have never had to worry about.
How can we expect children to be attentive and ready to learn without taking care of social emotional needs?
My Project
This project will support two fifth grade classrooms of over 50 students. Students will be able to redirect their energy at their desks with stability balls, wiggle seats, chair bands, floor cushions, standing desks, stress balls, and fidget toys. A sound machine, headphones, and canopied area will provide a safe place in the classroom to calm down. Mindfulness coloring books, therapeutic putty, and fluorescent light filters will help students meet their sensory needs.
All students learn in different ways.
These self-regulation kits allow students the opportunity to reflect and begin to learn what works best for them. Self-regulation is a "muscle" that takes time to build and we want our students to begin strengthening that muscle early!
