My school is a public elementary school located in a mid-western urban city. My school is in the third largest school district in the nation. I am the full time Art teacher to over 400 KG-eighth grade students. 80% of our students are from low-income families. I teach drawing self-portraits across the grade levels at my school. I would love for students to have mirrors that would sit on their tables compared to the small compact mirrors that I have now that tend to be dangerous because they slip out of small hands and break. Having these mirrors will let students have two free hands to draw giving them the opportunity to succeed at the skill being taught-drawing faces. I would also like to have a supply of dry-erase markers so students can practice drawing their faces on the mirrors. These markers can be used for students to write directly on the mirrors and then erase, which is a great tool for practicing. I will use these resources with over 400 students in my school and will help them to understand drawing their own faces. I know students will benefit from the supplies because our students learn best by actually having hands-on experiences. This will give them the up-close and personal opportunity of being able to touch the mirrors and erase mistakes before drawing and painting on paper. Once students gain the understanding of drawing the proportions of their face, I will teach a project in every grade level KG-eighth grade that deals with the subject of self-portraits. To complete this project throughout the grade levels that I teach I would need 33 self-portrait mirrors. I would also need 50 dry erase markers for students to practice drawing their outlines on the mirrors. These preliminary drawings can be erased and students can practice over and over learning to draw the shapes of their face. I know students will benefit from using these two supplies in the Art room. They will gain a better understanding of drawing and this will make it relevant to them because they will be using their own faces to learn from.
