I am the Atelierista (art teacher) for a Reggio Inspired preschool program that supports 10 classrooms between 2 centers. The children in our program come into the Atelier (art studio) for an hour once a week. Afternoon blocks are also available to children who attend full day. The Atelier is a classroom that provides the the space and materials for children to further explore and express their individual interests and learning interests in their classroom.
The project ideas differ from classroom to classroom according to the interests and curiosity of the children in each class.
Currently these interests include “How things Move”, “Building Habitats”, “Mixtures”, and “Nature “. The children express a growing interest in the areas of science, social studies and the arts.
In order to support the children and their classrooms, many different materials are necessary. In one classroom the children love to mix everything they can get their hands on! This includes making different types of play dough, colorful glitter glue, chalk paint, color mixing, chemical reaction materials ( baking soda and vinegar) just to name a few.
Thank you for considering to help fund our Atelier!
My Project
The materials listed for this project would provide young children the opportunity to explore new mediums and to create their own original art.
Preschool children enjoy hands on opportunities to explore.
Through exploration, the children discover their own sense of artistic style and appreciation for the arts. I am amazed by observing a group of 3 and 4 year olds first experience exploring clay and water. Some children are interested in creating something from the clay while others are interested in exploring how the clay feels, what will happen when water is added to the clay. Both approaches are enjoyable learning experiences for the children. The same approach is successful with paint, glue, sculpture materials and so on.
Open ended exploration turns preschoolers into artists, scientists, architects, chefs, musicians and so many other possible expressive creators. As long as they are provided with opportunities and supportive environments, children are capable of being active participants in their own learning.
