Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in an urban immigrant community, where my students often balance multiple lives simultaneously — that of school, home, and the neighborhood; that of American life, alongside their family's important cultural ties to their homelands. My students work hard and are super eager to learn new skills and ideas.
The longer that I have had the privilege to work here, the more I see the importance of providing my students with as many opportunities as I can for hands-on, exploratory opportunities.
I love being able to take them out into the world, into nature, and to explore the environment that exists beyond the boundaries of our school's surrounding blocks. In the classroom, I try to continue this exploration by providing creative outlets that can be difficult to access outside of school.
My Project
This project aims to fund art materials that will help my students explore their creative side. From new paintbrushes and palettes, to glitter paint and watercolor paper, I hope to be able to fund the materials that will give my students more opportunities to draw, paint, and create.
Returning to school after such a long time of online learning, I see how much my students crave chances to use their hands to make and create.
My goal this year is to provide them with the opportunity to make art - not only for self-expression and creativity, but also as a form of self-care. It is well-known that art can be a form of meditation and therapy for many people. So, in addition to exploring their creativity, I hope that these materials will provide my students with another form of calm, solace, and reprieve in the midst of a universally challenging year.
