This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Distance learning has been a challenge for my students, parents, and their teachers as well. The challenges we all face vary in nature, but currently, it is undoubtedly an economic challenge for us all. Our school is a Title I school, where 100% of our students receive free breakfast, lunch and supper.
My students are young scholars ready to tackle the 2020-2021 school year with excitement and perseverance, despite the obstacles they are facing.
My kids log into my Zoom class every day eager to learn. Before starting our instructional day, we take about 10-20 minutes to discuss what is going on in their life, around their neighborhood, our state and/or country. We are a very close despite the physical distance between us.
My Project
For almost a year now, my kids have been learning remotely. They have not been able to physically interact with their classmates. Despite the physical interaction, my kiddos know, respect, and care for each other. More than ever before, kids need a way to self-express themselves. So, in my class, we have at least two art projects per month. I teach my kids about different artists and the elements of art. They create and share their masterpieces via our learning platform. We then look at all the art pieces as if we were in a gallery.
I believe that self-expression and communication can be fulfilled through Art.
I have asked for a set of acrylic paint, a set of brushes, paint tray palette, a rock, and a 5" x 7" canvas for each of my students.
One of the projects I want to have my kids do is rock painting. We just finished our literature book, Esperanza Rising. One of the questions I posed my kids was to pick a fruit that best describes him/her. It became more than just a description. My kids started sharing their feelings about themselves, others, this pandemic, government officials, characters and much more. I knew at that moment that they needed to express themselves. I thought it would be powerful to have them paint their rock with a symbol of hope, power, or happiness. The 5" x 7" inch canvas is for my students to paint a still life arrangement they set up at home. This will be a gift for the family to communicate their feelings toward them. Art provides a risk-free environment that encourages our kids to take risks in a healthy manner. It provides opportunities for communicating their feelings and show off their skills. These art supplies will help us do that.
