Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a second year NYC Teaching Fellow. I work with special needs second grade children in Brooklyn, NY. 95% of the students in my school get free breakfast and lunch. If we are lucky, we have gym once a week. Many studies have shown the importance of physical activity in improving self esteem. It is important for my students to learn how to use their bodies in a positive way. Physical activity will help them get rid of some of the anger and anxiety these little people carry around. Last year I used my dance/exercise background to provide my class with structured forms of movement. The response I received was wonderful. The students remained on task and you could see some of the tension leave their faces. I would like to use yoga to further incorporate movement into my class this year. My students will be able to experience discipline, self-control, and the self esteem they are sorely lacking, through a physical activity they can master. Our youth need to be active and move their bodies. Healthy bodies and healthy minds allow more learning to take place. In order to help my students achieve these goals it would be wonderful to have yoga mats that could be rolled up and stored in our class "Fitness Center." I would need fifteen sticky yoga mats. Your contribution to this project would be appreciated over and over again as I intend to have the students work in our "Fitness Center" every day.
