Self-Directed Learning: The Importance of Discovery Based Projects
Help me give my students the magic of discovery learning. I have a class of above average students who will be energized by writing and taking pics for a grade level newspaper, exploring the world of explosions, etc.
The guiding principle in my school's mission statement is to infuse the arts into the core curriculum. To do that, it is important to know our students as individuals. The students at our school are very diverse, with multiple ethnicities, a wide variety of economic backgrounds (over 50% of our students are on the free and reduced-price lunch program), diverse learning abilities, and an incredible amount of talent. We believe each student is different, and different is welcomed and celebrated here.
My job is to help every student come to the belief that he or she is capable of success, as that is half the battle won.
Once they believe they are capable, they are able to use classroom learning, along with collaboration and critical thinking skills, to make sense of the world and progress in their formal education.
William Butler Yeats once said, "Education is not the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire." At our school, we light that fire by encouraging each student to development his or her individual talents, both academically and artistically.
My Project
The students in my classes will be able to direct their own learning and be motivated to dig deeper into their world by participating in the discovering learning in the multiple subjects covered by the books and kits in this project. These classes include STEM, STEAM, Discovery Learning, and Creative Writing.
There are two possible outcomes: if the result confirms the hypothesis, then you've made a measurement; if the result is contrary to the hypothesis, then you've made a discovery.
This quote by Enrico Fermi speaks to the commitment I have made to my students to encourage their critical thinking skills by giving them projects that will allow them to "discover" what is real and meaningful to them.
This is especially important in sixth grade. I teach this grade because I believe it to be the year the "light bulb" in their minds shine more than any other year. I want to give them the full opportunity to make the most of that light!
