My Students

Coronavirus pandemic...a year ago, we never could have imagined we would be here. A music classroom is truly affected by not being able to be together. My classroom is usually a bustle of activity and joy, but we are in a very different place now.

We are learning and loving music still.

I mainly use self-produced videos or YouTube to help my students with music concepts. It is a challenge because music is a group sport! Voices together are better voices, and it is nearly impossible to get that without the proper technology and patience, patience, patience.

My Project

Last year, I transitioned from an academic classroom teacher to a music classroom teacher for grades pre-k through 5. Many of my skills were transferable and helped me make the transition.

I knew going in that I wanted my music classroom to be different; I wanted it to be a place of peace and joy.

Based on some research I had done, it was so very evident that our school population needed mindfulness activities. Each class period begins with a short mindfulness activity, and I found that my options weren't endless. I often heard, "We've already done this one," knowing full good and well that these very students will watch the same YouTube video countless times. I wasn't content with "Well, watch it again". Some of these items will help me deepen my well of mindfulness activities to offer my kids.

As mentioned, I transitioned from an academic classroom to a music classroom. Many of my techniques went with me, but it wasn't long until I realized I needed more support and resources. Classroom management is very different, and it soon became evident that I needed some teaching for myself to make sure my classroom was a safe place of learning. Some of the items in this project will help me stay prepared for my students.
