I teach in a self contained classroom at McAllister Elementary school in Richmond Hill, Georgia. I have 6 students ranging from kindergarten to fifth grade. We also collaborate and work closely with the two other K-5 self-contained classrooms within our school. There are varying disabilities within my classroom as well as the other classrooms. We have students that are medically frail, students with Autism, and students with Down Syndrome, just to name a few. We are a life skills classroom and have recently introduced a cooking class to our curriculum. Students are able to participate in preparing and cooking their own food. This class has been extremely beneficial for students that typically don't eat foods that they are not accustomed to. Life skills are very important to our students for their future independence and success!
Our students benefit from real world experiences to teach life skills and responsibility.
We would like to increase the amount of real-world experiences for my students. They learn best when given hands on experiences. Thank you for your consideration in supporting our wonderful classrooms!
My Project
Our students will learn responsibility, life skills, and understand where their food comes from! We will be able to teach our students about the life cycle, responsibility of caring for eggs, chicks, and chickens, as well as where food comes from! Not only will students have daily jobs to take care of our chickens, they will be able to use the eggs in their cooking class!
We have combined with two other self contained classrooms to work on life skills and to maximize the amount of our students taught these very important skills.
By teaching students the importance of caring for others, we are teaching empathy and responsibility.
Our wonderful school is working with our community and building a chicken coop for larger chickens. We will maintain hatching smaller chickens with our self-contained classrooms. Once our chickens get large enough, they will move to our larger chicken coop and we can start our hatching again! We also have community members that have ponds so we are able to hatch duck eggs as well! Our chickens will not only benefit our classrooms, but will also benefit the 1300+ students within our school!
