This September, I will be teaching a Self-Contained Autism classroom, a role that I approach with great commitment and thoughtful preparation. The central focus of the program is to support students in developing functional academic skills, enhancing their interpersonal communication, and building recreation and leisure abilities. Additionally, we emphasize the importance of maintenance skills and personal self-help strategies that contribute to their overall independence and quality of life. The items on my list have been carefully selected to ensure that each student’s individual needs are effectively addressed, promoting a supportive and enriching learning environment for all. The rug will be helpful in creating a cozy corner in my classroom to help regulate emotions. The organizers and storage carts will be helpful to help organize materials by student and ensuring that each student has a safe space to keep their items.
