My students are special because they come from a diverse background, seven languages are represented in my classroom. We function like a family in an environment that promotes positive social interactions around respect, responsibility, and safe behaviors.
We embody the Hawaiian values of aloha, malama, kuleana, and kokua.
We care for one another and promote kindness to everyone and focus on our responsibility to our community and island. My students work hard, they have a growth mindset that drives them to want to reach their goals and they encourage their peers to do the same. They are curious, excited about learning and love school, so much that they are sad when it is the weekend.
When I asked them why they love school, most of them said it is because of science. My students enjoy integrated lessons that are cross-curricular including reading, writing, and STEM. I hope to enhance their love of learning and encourage them to continue to be interested in the world around us.
My Project
Children come to school with emotional experiences that affect their ability to focus and learn in school. Research shows that stress and trauma in the human brain prevents the amygdala from processing information. I have been practicing mindfulness, yoga, and positive talks with my students this year. I have seen a difference in how students behave. I would like to extend my social emotional learning (SEL) lessons to include mentor texts that can provide scenarios that students can relate to and use when they are feeling stressed.
When students feel happy, loved, accepted, confident, and brave, then they will have the ability to take risks and persevere to reach their goals in life.
My school supports PBIS or positive behavior intervention systems, and encourages developing social emotional health of students. However, when I asked if there was any funding to help me develop social emotional learning in my classroom, I was told, there is not any funding. I want my students to develop their emotional health and well being by giving them access to stories and information that can build a foundation for future emotional growth. Selebrating the best in each of us will build experiences in my classroom that will promote kindness and strength in my students.
