My Students

I am a special education teacher for grades K to 2. In my role, I teach academics but I also focus on social skills and social-emotional learning (SEL). I teach in a high-poverty school where the need for SEL is extremely dire. I have been certified in Educational Neuroscience through Butler and am a member of my district's SEL cadre. SEL is an amazing tool and watching my students learn and utilize SEL strategies is simply amazing. The effects of SEL that I'm seeing in my students are astounding. I am able to help my students learn to regulate their emotions and brain and body states in order to help them find success at school, academically and behaviorally. Many students go from complete meltdowns with no rationalization to being able to verbalize their emotions, wants, and needs.

My Project

I have four years experience in social-emotional learning. I piloted SEL practices as a first grade teacher, took a master's program in Educational Neuroscience at Butler University, and was chosen as a member of my school district's SEL cadre. A teacher's SEL toolbox can never be full enough. I am continuously looking for ways to grow and improve as an educator.

As a special education teacher, I work closely with staff and students to lead and teach SEL within my school.

I lead school-wide mindfulness practices each morning that include chair yoga and deep breathing. This year, as a district, we are fully embracing SEL practices. Getting this training will deepen my knowledge and add to my educator toolkit. It will also allow me to share my strengthened expertise with my co-workers as well as implement these new practices with my students.

Becoming a certified yoga instructor who is specialized in SEL will benefit my students during and after school. We will be able to offer after school programs to help encourage kids to have active, healthy minds and bodies.
