SEL Tools to Grow Comfort and Confidence in our Classroom!

My Project

I am a first year teacher who is consistently working to build a comfortable and inviting space for my classroom of 2nd graders. The materials and supplies I am requesting will largely go towards creating a classroom environment that is based on the tenants of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) and ensuring that the diverse group of learners in my class all have access to a mode of learning that caters to their unique needs.

Flexible seating will allow my students to take to charge of their own learning and instills a sense of personal independence by allowing them to find where they learn best.

My students currently have the option to work at their desks, rainbow tables, or on beanbag chairs. The seating I have chosen allows students to work on the floor if they choose, or find other areas in the classroom that might suit their learning better.

I have requested various sensory tools as well, including chair bands for students who may work better when moving (so they have the option to kick their feet), Play-Doh for brain breaks, play-based learning, or anger/anxiety management, and a tent for our calming corner, so students who may need it can have a quiet and darker space when doing their work or taking a break to breathe.

We are also always looking for more SEL books in our classroom, as my students love read-alouds, and learn a lot when discussing the characters' feelings and their own as a class. They also love music and movement, and I am hoping to have Boomwhackers to incorporate more of this into my classroom.

It is my hope that this project will continue to create a space where my students feel at ease and are happy returning to every day.
