Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our school, we work as a community to focus on all aspects of our students. I teach math and science, and my team teacher teaches ELA and Social Studies. Between us, we will share about sixty students.
Our students are learning to identify their emotions, empowering themselves by identifying those emotions and choosing the seating that best suits their learning.
They are empowered by being active participants in their education, which helps prepare them for the upper-grade levels.
They demonstrate a growth mindset whenever they choose how they learn best.
My Project
I chose flexible seating options and social-emotional tools to help my students become engaged learners. Adding more seating choices to our classroom helps the students have a variety of places to work alone, in pairs, or in small groups. Currently, we have tables and some desks, a small couch, a couple of wobble seats, some lap desks, and traditional classroom chairs.
When students are frustrated, they can change their seat choice or use the social-emotional tools in the cozy corner to help them refocus on work.
Students are excited that they can be active learners and participants in choosing where they sit and have a place to unwind when learning gets difficult—for example, using a cozy corner to listen to music or using noise-cancelling headphones and a fidget. Our classroom is a place that the students can focus on learning and developing their social emotional skills in a safe environment.
