My Project
I recently acquired an at-home table tennis kit that you can attach to a table and play. I brought it to my classroom and challenged a few students. To my surprise, the whole class loved it. Everyone was asking to play. Even the students that are difficult to engage eagerly stood up for their turn in line. Students ended up staying after school to compete against one another. They started teaching other students how to play, and you slowly saw the progression in students' skill over the course of just a few games.
As teachers, we must continually be looking for unique mediums to engage students in ways outside of the curriculum material to build deeper student connections.
I believe offering table tennis as an outlet has the ability to increase connection within the classroom walls, build student self-esteem, and give kids a safe space to compete and have fun. Specifically with table tennis, it is an inclusive sport that is easy to learn. I saw within those few games that students supported one another and had a huge smile on their face while doing so. As we come out of the pandemic, we need to create spaces for students have fun and socialize, and access to table tennis is an impactful way to accomplish this.
