Social Emotional Learning is an important part of all my interactions with students. The skills needed to deal with emotions and situations in today's world need to be strong in every child.
Many students learn better hands-on when being taught new skills.
Because my students are deaf or blind, it is beneficial to include hands-on learning in SEL. Engaging their minds through working with their hands and being able to show them ways to deal with situations through discussion, role play, and object manipulation has proven to be a good thing in my classroom. In order to continue building these skills, we need more materials, such as magnetic blocks, clay, and sensory items, along with a cart that will provide a central place to put them. This enables the students to go to the "chill wall" and get what they need to decompress, to begin an activity, or just to engage with these skills.
