My Project

My kindergarten students are learning that school is not only about letters and numbers—it is also about learning how to be kind friends, manage big feelings, and believe in themselves. Social-emotional learning is a huge part of our day, and picture books are one of the most powerful ways to start meaningful conversations about feelings, friendships, and making good choices. Books like The Good Egg and The Bad Seed introduce children to themes such as self-acceptance, responsibility, and making positive changes. Other titles in the series, like The Cool Bean, The Couch Potato, and The Smart Cookie help students understand kindness, confidence, perseverance, and that everyone has unique strengths.

These stories resonate with young children because the characters experience the same struggles they do.

I would love to build a collection of engaging SEL picture books that help students explore emotions and character traits in ways they understand. I am also requesting books that encourage perseverance and patience, such as The Very Impatient Caterpillar and The Little Butterfly That Could, which help children learn that growth takes time and effort. Another wonderful addition is Buffalo Fluffalo, a story that teaches students about kindness and not judging others based on appearances.

With these engaging SEL books, my students will build not only strong reading skills but also the emotional tools they need to become caring classmates and confident learners.
