Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom consists of many migrant students whose first language is not English. Although they are hard workers. they lack some of the skills to catch up to native English speaking students. These materials would aid in closing the gaps between these students and English speaking students.
We live in a rural town in Oregon where the migrant population is fairly large.
Students come to this area with their families looking for work. Our school is nearly 100 years old and makes up in charm what it lacks in ammenities. My students love to work hard and enjoy new stories and books. I believe that they can succeed and this type of intervention project is just the tool they need to succeed.
My Project
My students need materials such as a Daily Read-Along Listening Center, High Interest Intervention Reading Folders and Holes Read-Along Kit, to support their fluency in reading. I teach struggling English Language Learners and they need additional resources. Students will be able to listen to a story while following along with the reader.
This will aid them in understanding the text, vocabulary and concepts embedded in each text. Students will also hear examples of correct fluency. This modeling through the read-aloud will strengthen their own fluency. The other supplements are aimed at targeting specific areas in the curriculum that will aid them in their lessons.
I believe that everyone should have the same opportunities in life regardless of their color of skin or the language they speak.
If I can aid in the strebgthening of the students fluency and bridging that gap between the struggling students and the English speaking students then each child will be close to having an equal chance in acheiving success.
