My Students

Welcome to our classroom! We're a diverse bunch, but what's evident is that we are a community. We are a neighborhood school with about 80% of students walking to or being dropped off at school by a guardian. We are a high poverty school, but my students are motivated to learn and want be engaged in the classroom.

Being an inclusive school, our classroom is full of students with diverse abilities, integrating both general and special education in one room.

These first graders have differing skills, but one thing they have in common is a love for learning.

My first graders are energetic and enthusiastic! They love to sing and get up and move. Unfortunately, many of them are missing basic academic skills in the areas of literacy, math, and writing. This year we are focusing on closing the achievement gap and creating a classroom full of confident, successful students.

My Project

In the elementary classroom Science and Social Studies can often take the back burner to core subjects like Reading and Math. That is why it is so important to integrate these subjects into core instruction. A great way to do this is through read-aloud books during the Reading block!

Read-alouds are a great way to engage students in new content while also activating students' background knowledge.

Students can listen to non-fiction and narrative texts about Science and Social Studies during Reading and then later apply that learning.

In First grade Science we learn Earth, Physical, and Life Sciences. For Earth Science we focus on the Earth's location in relation to the sun, but also about weather, moon phases, and seasons. For Physical Science we study the properties of solids and liquids. For Life Science we study the life cycle of plants. These resources would allow the students to learn about these areas with engaging, colorful books.

First grade Social Studies is about families. These books focus on what it means to be a family, different kind of families, and how people in families are related.

With these books as a resource, my students would have engaging texts to have read to them or to read independently to integrate Science, Social Studies, and Reading.
