My Students

My school is a small, rural neighborhood school where I consider the students my family. I have taught first grade here for 34 years; many of those in the same classroom. I have had many second-generation families of students come through my classroom each year. I live and also go to church in this neighborhood and volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank in the summer here. Seventy percent of the students come from an economically disadvantaged home, and many live with one parent or are being raised by grandparents.

My students are smart, fun-loving, and eager to learn about the world!

Many don't have opportunities to travel beyond our town or neighborhood and only learn about other places through the books we read and the places visited digitally at school.

My Project

One of my favorite memories as an elementary student was getting the Weekly Reader magazine on Fridays for our free Reading times. I couldn't wait to take mine home to read to my little brother and share the information that I had learned with my parents. I want to give that experience to my students.

While Weekly Readers aren't available today, Scholastic News and Science Spin are monthly magazines written now that will give my students the same experience!

I know how excited my students will be to have their own copy to read together and discuss at school in our classroom community and then take it home to share with their families to read again! Each subscription also comes with digital links that can be accessed to deepen their understanding and knowledge. The Map Skills workbook will also enable them to learn about places and the geography of the world.
