My Project
In the world of education, as well as on TV and even in young novels and books, often people of color, such as African-American children and adults, don’t see themselves. Having more diverse books, with authors and characters within the book s that looks like themselves, builds self confidence, social awareness, and influences children to know they can do anything.
Instilling the examples that there are people of your own ethnicity/race that have gone on to do distinguished and amazing things definitely stays with the child, in a positive manner.
Daily during our brain breaks, I will read the stories, ask questions, and have them create little plays based on the stories. Especially with the story Sulwe , written by Lupita Nyong’o, as well as the story about little heroes, showing that heroes in our community can be influential. The books that were chosen, will be beneficial to our kids in self-esteem, social awareness an inspiration to do great things!
