Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This year I'm working as an intervention teacher so these kids have to do both online classes with their regular teacher and then show up for group sessions with me. My 28 sixth graders come from low-income families. They are first generation students who mainly speak Spanish. The majority of them live in multi-family homes sharing rooms with multiple siblings. Most of them have a hard time finding a quiet place to do online classes but they still show up with smiles on their faces and ready to learn. They are really happy with just the basic necessities of life.
My Project
Help me get my students books about diversity and inclusion. They need books that they can see themselves in, so they can be inspired and strive. It is very important for children to see their lives and the lives of others reflected in the literature they read. These stories they can actually relate to.
Books are one of the best ways to teach children about the importance of race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Unfortunately with everything going on around the world our children have less access to books than ever before. With our libraries closed our students have less access to reading materials. These books will be used as interactive read alouds in our google meets. These books will be read to students and they will have engaging activities to go along with them.
Books are one of the best ways to teach children about the importance of race, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
