My students need nonfiction materials to learn about the world around them including Scholastic Let's find out magazines, nonfiction ebooks and a tablet to read them on.
My Kindergarten students are very eager to learn. This is the first year of school for most of my students and nothing grabs their attention better than songs, games and interacting with nonfiction materials.
My students are 5 and 6 years old in an inner city school.
Some do not have access to computers at home. My students are very active and need variety during the day. I am constantly trying to find different educational activities to grab my students attention.
Unfortunately, my school keeps losing funding each year and it is up to the teachers to get creative and still provide what our students need.
My Project
If we receive these nonfiction materials my students will be able to learn more about the world. I have a large ESL population in my class and I need to incorporate as much "real life" text/pictures in my lessons as possible. By experiencing these nonfiction topics in print (Scholastic Magazine) and on a computer/tablet (ebooks), it will bring it to life and help my ESL students better comprehend the concepts. These materials will also help me to meet the needs of struggling student by providing them extra practice on exactly what they need. I can also use it to challenge those students who are ready for harder concepts quicker than the rest of the class.
This donation will improve my classroom greatly because I will able to give more students daily exposure to nonfiction books.
Currently I have more fiction materials and, while that is an important part of our learning as well, I want to build a bigger, better nonfiction collection than what I already have. I feel that exposing the students to these materials on a tablet will make it come alive and be even more exciting for them. It will be especially crucial for my ESL students.
