My students need to visit Mystic Aquarium. More than half of our students have never been to an aquarium before and giving them this real world experience will help them stay more engaged in our lessons. We are requesting help with transportation costs.

My Students
My classroom is a place where students feel safe and are encouraged to take risks. Many students come into my class believing that they are not good at science and that this class will be boring like the others. Luckily, their minds change quickly as they discover that this class is based on their interests. My students are excited to explore the world and discover what they can learn when given the chance to take charge of their learning.
My school was ranked the fourth most diverse school in Connecticut in 2018 and is home to students who speak over 20 languages, including English, Spanish, Hindi, Twi, and Bengali.
My students come from a variety of different backgrounds and economic classes. We have a student population of over 1500, 51% of whom receive free or reduced lunch.
As diverse as our students are economically and culturally, they are diverse in their academics. Our school is home to an academy model where students choose 1 of 5 academies to join their sophomore year. The academy they choose to join is based on their future career interest. These include a Medical Careers Academy, Stem-D Academy, and a Global Studies Academy.
My Project
The tenth-grade NGSS Ecology Unit focuses on the Orca whale and its surrounding ecosystem. Through this field trip, my students can connect what they learn through class to a real-life experience: they can see what the animals in the ecosystem look like, see what they act like, and hopefully be inspired to do all they can to protect them. They can experience the beauty of these animals and become invested in their future and their lessons in the classroom.
Your donation to this project will help my students see firsthand what an Orca whale sees, see what a Sea Lion looks like, and learn how these animals are connected.
They will gain a better understanding and awareness of the importance of ecosystems and their protection, by seeing these animals up close and personal.
