Seeing the Unseen: Expanding Student Access to Microscopic Discovery

Help me give my students access to 7 more compound microscopes to ensure all learners in my large science classes can explore the microscopic world with hands-on, standards-based investigations.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Thanks to the incredible support of donors, our classroom recently received five high-quality compound microscopes. However, with class sizes of 30 or more students, we currently do not have enough microscopes for every lab group to actively participate at the same time. This grant will allow us to purchase seven additional microscopes, ensuring each small group has direct access to these powerful tools during life science and environmental science lessons.

These compound microscopes feature 100x–2000x variable magnification, durable construction, and full starter slide kits.

They allow students to study everything from plant cells and bacteria to pond water microorganisms and crystal formations. The microscopes align with 7th and 8th grade Arizona Science Standards and NGSS by supporting investigations in cell theory, heredity, environmental impact, and scientific modeling.

By expanding our microscope set, we can move from demonstration-based labs to full student-driven inquiry, where every group is engaged in observing, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from real-world samples. This hands-on, minds-on approach increases engagement and deepens student understanding of core biological principles.

STEM Impact and Cross-Curricular Connections:

Life Science: Students will observe plant and animal cells, draw and label structures, and analyze functions—building understanding of genetics, organelles, and cellular processes.

Environmental Science: Learners will examine soil, leaf litter, and water samples to assess biodiversity and understand human impact on local ecosystems.

Health & Microbiology: By observing slides of bacteria and other pathogens, students connect science to real-world concerns like hygiene, disease prevention, and immune response.

Every microscope added is another student group empowered to investigate, ask questions, and learn like a scientist. Your support will make our classroom more equitable and inquiry-rich, giving every student a front-row seat to discovery.
