Seeing the Stars

My students need 9 binoculars as a start to making observations of the night sky.

My Students

Light pollution hides so much of what the night sky has to offer. It is difficult with limited funding to transport students far enough away and at night to observe the sky so students may make observations without equipment that aids the eye.

We live in a large suburban area and our school serves about 1500 students grades 10-12.

Our school began offering astronomy last year at which time about 45 students took the course, this year 75 students have enrolled. My students take Astronomy as seniors, and they come with many misconceptions about the universe which we are a part of. I love being able to watch their reactions when we explore new topics because they turn into little kids again, eyes wide with bewilderment!

My Project

Like any good science lab, hands-on is best. Many of my students have expressed an interest in meeting after dusk to make observations or have asked how they could do so at home. As telescopes are very expensive, binoculars are the first step toward allowing them to do this because they aid the eye in seeing beyond the light pollution. Astronomy is not just observing stars. We study a great deal about chemistry, physics and geology in our pursuit to an understanding of the universe and objects within. We also study history as a key component to our understanding of the development of astronomy and how the night sky has been involved in the formation of dominant world cultures.

There is a big difference between seeing your favorite animal on TV and seeing it at a zoo, or better yet, in their natural environment.

When I see how my students become so engaged when we have discussions or watch videos for visual representations, I can only imagine how much real observations could enrich their learning experience.
