My students need two GoPro Hero4 cameras to assist them in determining what types of surfaces work best with different types of robot wheels. Specific attention focused on hurricane, tornado and other natural disaster affected regions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our Title I school has six hundred students in Pre-K through fifth grade. They are curious, enthusiastic, hard-working, and respectful. Our school is 84% free and reduced-price lunch and we have free breakfast for 100% of the student body. Each one deserves a dignified education. Unfortunately, many students do not have their basic necessities met outside of school.
My students do not let their socioeconomic status affect their desire for learning.
The students are eager learners and have a love for school, which for many is the only consistent part of their lives. Every day I learn more about their struggles, their hardships, and their courage. I attempt to foster an environment that helps each student feel comfortable, safe and enjoy learning.
The diverse life experiences of my students bring a unique atmosphere to my classroom and our entire school. There is never a day in which I am not in awe of my students' lives, both good and bad. My students are excited to be at school. Our school offers the most consistent home many of them will have with their most consistent family. I am a long time member of ATPE for fifteen years.
My Project
My Fifth grade Engineering Team has a consistent desire to learn new STEAM applications. Our current campaign - ROBOTS. Our goal is to engage hands-on learning through designing and engineering principles. My students are highly engaged in these applications, as they work on projects growing out of their imagination. Our ROBOTS offer STEM activities that increase our knowledge in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematical programing! When children care deeply about the projects they are working on, they are not only more motivated but they also develop deeper understandings and connections to knowledge.
After this past year's hurricanes in our state, Texas, and Florida my engineering team wanted to experiment with surfaces that were best suited for areas that have been affected by natural disasters - highways, roads and pathways.
My students have an innate desire to make things better, to improve current conditions. During our daily construction my students draw on prior STEM knowledge and explore hypotheses in order to conclude what surfaces work best with different wheel materials. As my students accomplish goals using their robots, the desire for new challenges naturally occur.
We have a great need for a two GoPro Hero4's to help us collect data. Using the GoPro's on our robots will give us a better perspective to the relationship between surface and machine movement. We will investigate ramps, roads and other types of surfaces and how each of these affect movement.
