Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

King College Preparatory High School's student newspaper, the Jaguar Journal, is entering its second year of publication. In an effort to ensure that the students' voices are heard and that they are effective in the school society, I am hoping to create a program with the best opportunities available to the students. A part of any news-gathering organization is photography; cameras capture the news in ways that words never could. As the old adage says, a picture is worth a 1000 words. Unfortunately, I can only talk about photography and its role in journalism, rather than giving students the opportunity to experience it. In an ideal world, I would have a class set of cameras and memory cards for use, and I am shooting for that goal. However, any help in this area would be appreciated. I'm currently lending my personal camera to my students to use for their purposes. There will be approximately 55 students total in my two journalism classes, with approximately 10 students on the editorial staff. The students range in age, though a majority of them are juniors and seniors. The school services over 90% African-American students. The journalism classes are electives, and as such, are at the bottom of the totem pole for money. If the students are to learn non-print media literacy, and the importance of photojournalism in their school society and our larger world, hands-on experience with cameras is a necessity.
