My Students

"Yuck and come here" are comments I hear every year as I attempt to get my science students involved in life science. For so long life science tended to be only for the medical career path. With the addition of these microscopes students will be able to see how life science applies to THEIR lives.

My students are in the 8th grade and are the typical teenagers.

Our building houses 600 students from 6th to 8th grade. We were recently affected by a tornado and are scrambling to get equipment to accommodate all students. From my experience having the hands-on equipment shows students that science is not for just doctors--science is for anyone who has a loved one, a parent, or a child.

My Project

As adults we know what sickness and hospitals can feel like. My students have met or have been a part of a community that experienced lots of injuries. To be able to show them what parts of the blood are and how cells can fight infection is a powerful step towards making them more confident in their everyday lives and preparing them for their future careers, be it doctor, parent, or trade worker. My students need more microscopes in the classroom to view life science. The most exciting time in life science is seeing objects not seen by the naked eye.

Microscopes are high dollar items that have to be planned for, budgeted for, and hopefully purchased.

With a large school and lots of basic needs, costly science equipment oftentimes gets put to the back burner. With your support I can use these microscopes in my classroom and help to make a difference in the student that may be taking care of you one day.
