This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Patience. Clear examples. Kindness. Succeeding in the 9th grade Special needs/ESL classroom requires many qualities and creative ideas from both student and teacher.
Our school is located in the borough of Manhattan in New York City.
Our school is influenced by fashion and the arts which ends up attracting many very creative students of all socio-economic levels from all over the city.
My 9th grade students are all English Language learners many of them also have special needs as well. A stranger coming into my classroom, however, would not immediately pick up on any of this though. They are so incredibly hard-working and try hard every day to complete the frequently complex Common Core aligned curriculum.
My Project
Given that my students are so creative and visual, I feel that supplementing our study of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet with a graphic novel version of the play would benefit their understanding in a tremendous way. I am requesting 36 copies of Gareth Hind's graphic novel version of Romeo and Juliet. For both groups of students, those with special needs and those with limited levels of English, being able to see a visual depiction along side Shakespeare's words will enable them to understand the complicated language faster while still experiencing the text as originally written.
While my students are definitely up to tackling the complex world of Shakespeare, the use of these graphic novels as supplementary texts would enable them a more in depth study.
Perhaps also giving them more confidence in tackling future Shakespearean texts.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
