My students need an LCD projector so they can see visual representations of abstract science concepts to help increase their understanding.

My Students
Do you remember your science teacher explaining a concept such as mitosis and having no clue what they were saying? Science has many concepts that are very abstract and middle school students, especially English Language Learners, learn best when they can see multiple visuals of a science concept.
I teach science at a small rural middle school in Northern California.
My students come from several small nearby rural communities where many face the challenges associated with living in a high poverty area. Our school is small with a group of very dedicated teachers who work together to provide our students with the best education possible. Not enough of our students go on to college and we are working to change this. A quality education is vital in helping my students break the cycle of poverty many of them are living in and we need the educational resources to help achieve this.
My Project
By receiving an LCD projector, I will be able to support student learning by making science concepts less abstract and being better able to engage students through technology. In addition, this projector will allow me to open my students up to the vast world of science and bring them outside our geographically isolated area. With this projector we can send our names into space through NASA's website, Skype with real scientists, and engage in citizen science. My hope is that by providing students with a solid education in science and showing students what is beyond their immediate community, it will motivate them to go on to college and achieve their goals. This projector will be used daily in my science classroom and, since our school is truly a small family, it can also be utilized by teachers in other subject areas to enhance instruction.
As a science teacher who is passionate about what she teaches, it is my goal to communicate my passion to my students.
Technology allows me show students just how exciting, ever-changing, and dynamic science really is.
