Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My middle school students live in a large urban district where over 85% come from economically disadvantaged households. I teach health and science to seventh and eighth graders. The majority of my students were reluctant readers until I created a classroom library with books they wanted to read. Now my students not only check out books but come to class before school to discuss the reading.
Our classroom library needs to be updated with new novels from diverse authors.
Our school became a Project Lit chapter last year and we read novels in a lunch group as well as individual books that we read on our own and discussed. This year's list of books is sure to grab the attention of students new to my classroom and those from last year. They will most certainly notice the new choices as soon as they enter class.
My Project
My students need access to books that embrace their own cultures and introduce them to others. They need topics that are relevant and reflect issues that are current and personal. Part of my students' ability to deal with anxiety is to immerse themselves in stories about young people who also struggle to fit in, overcome obstacles, and persevere through challenges.
My students need to see themselves in stories.
They need to see authors that reflect their diversity and voices. Middle school is a difficult time and the Project Lit book choices can make it a little easier by giving the students a way to see their own stories in a larger, global context.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
