Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title I school with students from pre-school to sixth grade. My students are from the inner city and are mostly English Language Learners. They are an amazing, caring and energetic group of children who are ready and eager to be lifelong learners. The school's philosophy focuses on enabling all students to make positive life choices, strengthen our community, and successfully participate in a diverse and global society.

The majority of the students who attend our school will be the first in their families to attend college.

My Project

We are currently learning virtually and I am unable to take my class to a museum to teach them about diversity in the world, but I can take them through literature. The book Parker Looks Up: An Extraordinary Moment will be a great mentor text for my first grade students when they are writing about small moments in their own lives.

Just like Parker, my students will also see themselves represented in literature and will hopefully find "a road before her (or him) with endless possibilities."

They will also have other high interest, multicultural read-aloud books to listen to such as The Colors of Us and Same, Same, but Different which will allow them to proudly embrace their uniqueness and accept their classmates unique differences/similarities as well.

Then, they will feel inspired to write more about their own moments/experiences in their primary composition books and proudly read it aloud to the class!
