Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The books I am requesting for my classroom library will provide a welcoming environment where my students will be able to see themselves reflected in the stories they read. Reading about both real people and fictional characters who share their culture and ethnicity will help foster their self-worth and sense of belonging.

With these new books, my students will be able to see a positive representation of their culture and will help them develop a positive self-identity.

At the same time, they will have more books to chose from that interests them and will help foster their love of reading.

Students will use these books to learn about famous men and women who excelled in various fields, including medicine, science, sports, art and politics. The book Separate is Never Equal will introduce students to the landmark desegregation case: Mendez vs. Westminster, which tells the true story about desegregation in the 1940s. Students will also use these books during independent reading time where they can select books to read for enjoyment and during small group time where they can read with a buddy and practice their reading fluency and summarizing skills. These books will have a positive impact on my students.
