Seeing Ourselves in Literature: Encouraging Reluctant Readers

My Project

These books will add to our classroom library, as my school does not have a school-wide library. Some of the books in this collection are student favorites that would allow more students to read the book at once, while others are new titles that I am sure will become favorites. Most of my students come to me as reluctant readers, but by literally surrounding them with books through a robust classroom library, we are able to build a community of readers as students find that they do like to read when paired with the right books!

Studies show that the more students read, the better they do academically, but who wants to read dusty books that don't reflect the reality of their life?

We do a lot of free choice reading in our classroom, and my students are looking for books that look like them - characters they can relate to, conflicts that they themselves are facing, and themes that speak to their hearts and lives.

Help me create classrooms of readers! This collection will expand our classroom library and help students to discover the reader within.
